At this instructional workshop, you will be supported in the creation of your fan, and more importantly, learn about traditional and contemporary understandings of the 'meaning of feathers'; proper handling and care; understandings shaped by diverse cultural awareness; and also tune in to your own intuitive cognitions with the nature of this offering.   All materials are inclusive, including feathers, natural and coloured hide, crystals, beads, etc. You are also welcome to bring your own special feather or decorative element if you have one to include in your creation.   Duration of the workshop: 2 hours   Investment: $ 120    MEANING OF FEATHERS   The meaning of feathers plays an important role in the awareness of many cultures. Most understanding embodies the spiritual idea that all natural things within the universe, including birds, have spirit forms. That spirit exists not only in humans, but also in birds — who imprint their fluidal energy onto their feathers — and in animals, plants, and all living beings. The doctrine is that everything is alive, and possesses an inherent virtue, power and wisdom.   The generalized meaning of feathers signifies honour, and connects the carrier with Creation and with the bird whose feather it came from. Feathers are perceived as gifts from the sky, the sea and the trees. They arrive unexpectedly, but not without purpose.   Birds were revered as bringers of messages and symbols of change, often embodying light-hearted freedom. Their feathers carry many spiritual, ceremonial and ritual uses. Decorated feathers were sometimes attached to sacred objects and tools. In the ancient cultures and traditions of First Nations, the meaning of feathers is inextricably tied to the understanding that birds, as spirit guides, appear through different stages of life to a person — teaching, guiding, and in some instances protecting them.   The meaning of birds and their feathers carries great significance, as they are considered to possess Creational energetic powers that can embody, attach to, and influence a person — empowering them with the powerful traits, attributes and characteristics of the bird.   Over the course of this workshop, we will also discuss the meanings of various birds and explore the significance of each bird's attributes and symbolism, along with the purpose, teachings and proper ways of smudging and handling sacred objects.   All ages are invited to attend this fun feather-crafting afternoon at SpiralGate of Art & Wellbeing.   — Biljana Webb     STAINED GLASS WORKSHOP   An educational, hands-on workshop with Whirling Wisdom Studio.       Biljana “Webb” Founding Director at SpiralGate of Art and Wellbeing, the  Frog Hollow Art Experience & Whirling Wisdom Art Studio Biljana is the heart and host of Frog Hollow — a visionary artist, intuitive, and ceremonial sound practitioner whose work is rooted in the living wisdom of land, ancestral knowledge, and the transformative power of sound. With over 24 years of experience weaving sound into healing, Biljana works across a rich range of modalities — from mindful meditation and intentional collaborative sound journeys to private ceremony and deep listening practices. Growing up in competitive gymnastics and cheerleading, she naturally found her way into coaching — a path she followed for nearly a decade. Her journey then carried her into the world of aerial silks, where she performed for many years with the Hamilton Aerial Group. In her own words: “My heart is very happy when I am flipping, twirling and teaching!”   Neka (Shashwananeka Lili Banchotova AKA Shash)   At just 12 years old, Neka — full name Shashwananeka Lili Banchotova — is already a seasoned aerial performer. She began her training at age 9 under the guidance of Laura Hunt, and the two have since grown into an inspired performing duo known as Di*Vine Play. Neka brings youthful energy, grace, and natural talent to every performance, and is proud to be the youngest co-host at Frog Hollow Integrative Art Experience.     Joanne Camilleri is a Toronto-based multidisciplinary performing artist, internationally recognized as a pioneer of fusion belly dance and a 2024 Walter Carsen Prize nominee. Inspired by her Maltese heritage and ancient mythology, she is the visionary behind INANNA: The Rising Goddess of Malta, a groundbreaking multimedia performance blending dance, circus arts, and visual storytelling, supported by the Canada Council for the Arts. Initiated into the Giver of Sacred Medicine Society in January 1960, he has devoted decades to the study, preservation, and sharing of Indigenous wisdom. His learning journey has brought him into relationship with more than 2,250 Nations and cultural groups across Turtle Island, Long-Beetle Island, and throughout the world, fostering dialogue, understanding, and the exchange of traditional knowledge. As an observer, advisor, and participant in ceremonies, rites, and rituals, he has served as a bridge between generations, helping to safeguard sacred teachings and cultural practices. Through his lifelong commitment to ceremony, community, and cultural continuity, he continues to inspire respect for Indigenous knowledge systems, the sacredness of creation, and the enduring wisdom of the Ancestors.   Oloja Bamidele Bajowa, wisdom keeper from Nigeria, Africa HRH Oloja Bamidele Bajowa of Bajowa Village in Ondo State Nigeria, Africa is a Yoruba Elder, High Chief (Ijama) and Babalawo who is globally renowned for his sharing of his Yoruba heritage through engaging ceremonies - a focus on honoring the ancestors, lecture, natural medicines, musical presentations, and consultations. He lives in a cabin beside the wild Magnetawan River in Northern Ontario, where the rhythms of forest, river, and fire continue to shape his understanding of what it means to live fully. For Mark, storytelling is the manifestation of the "Primal Contract." He believes that long before modern philosophy, humans gathered around the fire to transform raw, undigested experience into meaning. It is an ancient, relational agreement: We have each other's backs. We share this fire. Your story is part of my story. Mark’s connection to this gathering’s dedication is personal. Having participated in many sweat lodges run by Elder Joe Johnson, and occasionally serving as firekeeper, he is deeply grounded in the ancient medicine of the fire circle and the warmth that holds a community together. Martin come to Frog Hollow in 2023 in a collaborative initiative with Earth Dance Studio and Whirling Wisdom Studio for manifesting of the four sacred canvasses that present “Reconnecting to Nature Through Spiritual Teachings and Sacred Geometry of the Sweat Lodge”.The four 5’x5’  acrylic paintings are titled: “The Earth World”, “The Human World”, The Spirit World”, and “The Sky World”. These paintings, otherwise known as “sacred hoops”, are as a teaching tool to share Ojibway oral knowledge of the four races coming together at the sacred fire. We recognize this being the “8th Fire”. Each of the four races were given two gifts each. As humanity has reached a crossroad, we are asked to bring these eight gifts together to create One Great Nation. The gift of the Red Nation is to carry the Earth and Spirit knowledge. It is through the Sweat Lodge that the Red Standing People communicate this understanding. Martin is utilizing these paintings to communicate sacred knowledge, to develop cross-cultural relationships and to reconnect all people back to good relations with the Earth. Bio: Kristin is the author of several children’s books including Humphrey the Humpback Whale- illustrated with Biljana Banchotova Webb, the same artist as Kristin’s newest book, Sir Can’t-A-Lot. She has published a 7-book YA series for older teens “the mis-adventures of Alyson Bell” and a 1920’s biography of her well-known writer great-grandmother, Josephine Van De Grift Demi-Tasse and Mrs. Grundy. She currently spends time between near the ocean in British Columbia with her husband, three children and a myriad of pets, and Perth, Ontario, Canada, the small Canadian town with European charm so sweet which launched her latest children’s book My Day in Perth.
